ST. CHARLES, IL — Anjum and Randall Coffland appeared to be headed for a contentious divorce when Randall Coffland fatally shot the couple’s daughters before turning the gun on himself inside the penthouse of his luxury condominium in downtown St. Charles earlier this month, according to police reports.

As part of a Freedom of Information Act request made by Patch, the St. Charles Police Department recently released police reports from the March 10 shooting of twin sisters Brittany and Tiffany Coffland, 16 years old, inside Randall’s fourth-floor, three-bedroom penthouse apartment at in the 400 block of South First Street in St. Charles.

The reports paint a gruesome picture of the scene of the shootings and also shed some light on the state of Randall and Anjum’s relationship prior to the murders. The couple had been living at separate addresses at the time, and Brittany and Tiffany were living with Randall at the First Street condo.

The day before the shooting, Randall went to Anjum’s condo, where he was drinking wine. He told her he wanted to get back together. But Anjum said she wanted a divorce, according to the police reports.

On Friday morning, Randy sent Anjum messages stating he was going to kill himself. Later that afternoon, he contacted her and told her “he had secrets, too.” He then told her to come over so he could "tell her and show her the secrets," according to the police reports. Anjum tried to get him to tell her over the phone but he insisted she come over to his place.

A woman living at the apartment complex told police she saw Randall, whom she had met before, and a woman with dark hair who was wearing sunglasses walking up the stairs behind him at the complex at about 4:45 p.m. on Friday, according to the police reports. Randall appeared to be in a hurry because he was taking two to three stairs at a time. The woman stated Anjum and Randall did not appear upset and were not arguing.

When the two got up to the apartment, Anjum said she went into the kitchen. When she turned around, Randall was holding a gun. She asked him where he got a gun and asked about the girls. He told her they were already dead, according to police. He shot Anjum in the leg and told her he wanted her to live “so she could live with this the rest of her life.” He then ran into the bedroom and locked the door.

Brittany and Tiffany could have been shot just before Anjum's arrival, according to police reports. A man living in a unit below Randall’s penthouse reported hearing a “boom” sound at about 4:30 p.m. that day coming from the fourth floor and then heard a child scream faintly, according to police report. He told police the family living in the unit seemed “normal” and he’d never heard any fights or domestic-related issues.

Two 911 calls were placed from within Randall’s condo at about 5:12 p.m. — one from Randall who stated, “I just shot my two kids, and I shot my wife and now I’m going to shoot myself.” Before that, he can be heard saying, presumably to Anjum, “I want you to live and suffer like I did.”

Another 911 call came in from a panicked Anjum who screams, "Oh my God, my husband shot my kids," the mother said. She can be heard screaming her daughters' names and yelling, "My girls are dead!"

Police arrived on scene a short time later, and officers could hear Anjum screaming as they made their way up to the fourth floor. They found her on the ground in the front hallway of the apartment, covered in blood. She was screaming that her husband had shot her daughters.

Police started to make their way through the apartment. They found the first teenage girl dead on the couch. She was covered with a blanket and just her head was visible. The second teenager was found dead in bed in a back bedroom. Her head was on a pillow and she was covered with a blanket. It appeared she had been watching a video on a laptop prior to being shot, according to authorities.

Officers found Randall Coffland fully submerged, lying face-down in blood-stained water in the bathtub of the master bathroom. They also found a fully loaded pistol magazine lying on the bathroom counter. A cell phone was found on the side of the tub with “911” dialed in. A spent casing was found on the ledge of the tub.

Randall, Tiffany and Brittany were all pronounced dead at the scene. The Kane County Coroner ruled Brittany and Tiffany died of a single gunshot wound to the head while Randall died of a “single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.”

While speaking with friends at the hospital, police reported Anjum said Randall had made comments about killing the girls but she never thought he was serious about it. She also said Randall loved the girls and "spoiled them," giving them whatever they wanted. She went on to say he got made at her when she tried to discipline the girls, according to police reports.

Visitation for Tiffany and Brittany was held on March 17 at Christ Community Service in St. Charles. A visitation was held that same day at Yurs Funeral Home for Randall Coffland.

According to Brittany’s obituary:

Brittany loved music and helping people she would brighten everyone’s world with her infectious smile. She was very popular and adventurous. Her dream was to see the world. One of her fondest memory was spending time at Disney World with her family.

According to Tiffany’s obituary:

Tiffany was an avid animal lover and music lover. She was very popular and had a great group of friends. She was a top student and a budding Fashionista. She was recently training to do a marathon. One of her fondest memory was spending time at Disney World with her family.

The twin sisters attended Oswego High School as freshmen before the family moved to St. Charles. The girls were juniors at St. Charles East High School at the time of the shooting.

Funds have been pouring in for Anjum Coffland. A YouCaring page, set up by a woman who lived in Anjum’s apartment complex, has brought in more than $15,000 as of March 27. A GoFundMe page, set up by Jillian Addis, a former classmate of Brittany and Tiffany Coffland when they attended Oswego schools, has raised more than $2,600.

Donations can also be made to “Supporting Anjum Coffland in remembrance of Brittany and Tiffany" at St. Charles Bank and Trust, 411 W. Main Street, St. Charles, IL 60174.
