  • Each bite is sweet and refreshing with the perfect balance between banana and chocolaty goodness!
  • This copycat version of the popular Trader Joe’s ‘Gone Bananas’ slices keeps half of the banana on the stick for easier eating; it’s great for kids!
  • Frozen banana pops are super versatile and can be tailored to your liking. Sprinkle on your favorite toppings!
  • These pops are also a healthier dessert option compared to traditional ice cream or candy with fewer calories and less processed sugar. Bananas are packed with nutrients like potassium and fiber and are naturally sweet.

Ingredients and Variations

Bananas: Unlike banana bread, fresh bananas that are firm make the best frozen chocolate bananas. The more ripe the bananas are, the sweeter they will be, but try to pick bananas that are still firm.

Chocolate: Buy good quality chocolate chips for the best flavor. Dark chocolate is a perfect pair with sweet bananas, but any chocolate will work, including chocolate chips. For faster prep, use chocolate candy melts that don’t require any mixing with oil, simply heat them in the microwave.

Best Toppings for Chocolate Bananas

The sky is the limit! Once bananas are dipped in chocolate, they can be rolled in crushed peanuts, toasted coconut, crushed peanut butter cookies or Oreos, crushed cereal like fruity pebbles or cocoa puffs, or even crushed peppermint candies.

Try sprinkles, seeds, cacao nibs, a sprinkle of sea salt, or even a drizzle of peanut butter!

Pro Tips & Tricks

Freeze bananas with the sticks in them for at least 2 hours so they are easier to work with. Make sure that they are not touching while freezing. Frozen bananas means that the chocolate will freeze quickly, without pooling as it firms up. This means that the banana pops be round rather than flat on one side.

Place the melted chocolate in a narrow, deep jar, cup, pitcher or bowl. I prefer a 1 cup mason jar, filled about ¾ of the way with chocolate. This leaves space for dipping and not overflowing the chocolate, then add remaining chocolate after dipping. This makes it easy to dip the entire banana in one step instead of moving it around in a shallow bowl or pan. The chocolate on the banana will be smooth this way.

If you will not be adding toppings to all of the bananas, keep the first few as your plain ones. They will turn out the prettiest. Covering in coatings hides all imperfections!

Got leftover chocolate? Spread extra chocolate on a parchment lined tray and cool for chopping or for another use. Use it as a chocolate fondue dip for churros, or fresh slices of red or green apples, pears, or cubes of shortbread or sponge cake.

baking sheet

Ingredients

  • 4 bananas
  • 12 ounces chocolate
  • 2 Tablespoons butter or coconut oil

Toppings, optional:

Instructions

  • Peel bananas and cut in half. Insert a popsicle stick or lollipop stick about one inch into the cut side of each banana half. Place on a parchment lined baking tray and freeze for 2 hours (or longer).

  • In a large measuring cup or medium bowl, melt chocolate in the microwave for about 1½-2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds.

  • Add butter and stir until well combined and butter is melted. Optional: add chocolate to a skinny cup or mason jar for easier dipping. Fill about ¾ of the way, dip a couple of bananas, then add the remaining chocolate.

  • Dip banana in melted chocolate, allowing excess to drip. Either immediately roll in coconut or nuts and sprinkle on as needed, or swirl around until chocolate firms. Place back on the tray to allow chocolate to harden (place in the freezer for a few minutes if needed).

  • Eat immediately, or freeze. Remove from freezer for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Nutrition calculated without toppings.
  • Be sure to freeze bananas with the sticks in them for at least 2 hours.
  • Use a narrow, deep jar, cup, pitcher or bowl to melt the chocolate and butter in. Dipping the bananas into this type of vessel will be simple.
  • Save any leftover chocolate and use in a fondue dip or fresh slices of fruit or spongecake.
