What are the best lenses for bmpcc original

Mon Sep 07, 2020 8:44 pm

I want to buy a lens set for my bmpcc original. I have a speedbooster and also the Samyang 35mm T and the 135mm T Version. The SLR Magic 12mm and the Schneider 18-90mm. I want something professional and also for using on a rig and gimbal. I am looking for the Meike lenses but I like also the EF Mount it has more flexibility and gives with the speedbooster a wider range. I like the SLR Lenses they are light and this a big plus. I need something for run and gun but also for professional sets. Maybe something older a nice kit of lenses. What would you guys recommand?

IMHO the main advantage of the old BMPCC is its size. So, why combine it with heavy lenses plus adapters?
I’d go with classic S-16 lenses with C-mount. A very good wide is the Cinegon 10mm, but be careful to get the right version with the silver ring. It was even used by NASA in those days. If you need something wider, there is the Kowa 8mm, but it has more distortion. At 16mm, which would be your ‘normal’ focal length, there are quite a few options, like Schneider, Swiss-made Kern lenses or those made for 1” TV cameras by Canon. Starting from 25mm, even most 16mm versions will cover the sensor. But don’t get any of those cheap lenses offered all over Ebay made for 2/3” or even smaller, they are all going to vignette.
The 18-90mm Variogon is a great zoom, but on the heavy side. Another option might be the smaller and lighter Angenieux 20-80mm.

Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Classic s-16 lenses sounds nice, but it is hard to get good ones which also work. Last year I bought my first lens and it was a carl zeiss flektagon 20mm 2.8f and first it was working great but then something inside was wrong and I opened it and now I can not get it probably constructed back, now it is lying there without usage. I do not want to invest again in something that have to be repaired.

Like I need at least 3 lenses a wide range lens, medium and tele. Like 10mm, 16mm and 25mm. Someone else recommands other things? But now I have a speedbooster and why not use it to get more light into the sensor?

I also have 2 smc pentax-a lenses (28mm 2,8f and 50mm 1,7f

Has someone different ideas what lenses to buy? I need something reliable and professional

If you're looking for a set of primes, you could look into the Voigtländer Noktons for MFT mount. Duclos makes a cine-mod set that you can use with a follow focus and matte box, but even the standard versions have de-clickable apertures so they can be used for video.

They aren't cheap or light, and they are soft and dreamy wide open (with an extremely narrow depth of field), but get very sharp when you stop them down a little. And all your footage will match up nicely across these lenses.

I have the SLR Magic 10mm, which is a great lens but a bit of an orphan as none of my other lenses quite match its look. The Meikes would give you a consistent look across the set, plus they are light and native MFT mount; they have a more modern look and are relatively sharp. If you are dead-set on using the speedbooster there are a ton of options to consider in both modern and vintage lenses, you'd have to narrow it down to a specific look or quality that you need.

The Zeiss Jena Flektogon 20mm is not the kind of lens I wanted to recommend. It's a still lens, highly sought after and, coming from East Germany, with less than stellar QC from the start.

All the lenses I mentioned are from the west and had good QC. Of course, they can be damaged after all these years, but many samples are still performing well.

The SLR magic 10mm mentioned by Brad is a good alternative to the now pretty rare Cinegon. The Meikes are a good investment if a modern BMPCC 4K is in your future, since they cover MFT (S-16 lenses don't). Other than the ones mentioned, I don't own them but the current reviews are favorable: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=121182

I have the SLR Magic 12mm and that's a nice lens with that camera. That focal length was perfect for me at the wide end. Though after I got a Metabones and a Contax 18mm I don't use the SLR anymore...

I can't speak from experience, but I'm leaning towards the Meike cine myself. The price/ performance ratio can't be beat, especially for physically matching lenses for the professional look.

Based on the lenses you have listed I'd say you can't lose grabbing the 16mm to try out. And if you like it build out the kit over time. That is roughly the normal focal length for super16, 12 is usable wide, 25 is short portrait.

If you want to stay in ef mount adapted for future proofing the glass, I'd grab the Samyang/Rokinon 16 t 2.2. And get non boosted adapter as well to get 2 relative focal lengths out of each lens. 16 and 35mm plus booster and normal adapters gets you pretty much all you need, except for long telephoto. I shot 2 micro budget features with this combo, using the 16 probably 80% at least, but the Rokinons aren't mine, and the Meike weren't available at the time, I really miss having a 16 in my personal kit, and the price is right for the Meike, so I think I'll give it a shot.

Ive had mine since 2013 and have played with adapted lenses, vintage and new, 16mm glass, 35mm still glass, and have settled on treating it as a super16 camera rather than using speed booster to pretend the sensor is bigger. I like native mft lenses in the right focal lengths. My current compact kit is the Rokinon 12mm t2.2 along with the cheap Meike stills lenses 25 f1.8, 35 f1.7, 50 f2.0 which perform surprisingly well for the price. I'm on the fence about filling the hole between 12 and 25. I'd love to try that Meike 16mm but I know that if I love it I'll want the set, and I'm not really shooting much now, especially with COVID19. I'm tempted to get the laowa 17mm f1.8 which is cheap and well reviewed and would fill out my current kit nicely. Common sense would have me order the laowa and be done with it, decisions, ugh.

I've gone back to shooting with my Micro instead of my BMPCC4K, because, holy smokes, that IMAGE. The only downside of those original sensors (other than bad low-light) is the 1080p (at best) resolution. So my favorite lenses are the sharpest of the sharp zooms. They make that old 1080p stand up to a 4K world, with all the gorgeous color and highlights of the old sensors. So, here are my go-tos...

For outside, or decent light, Panasonic 12-60 OIS.

For inside, Sigma 18-35 with speedbooster.

For big range with OIS (But obviously not super sharp or bright, as it's a long zoom), Canon 18-135 OIS.

Man, those Fairchild sensors were MAGICAL...

The only way you'll get my bmpcc is to pry it from my cold dead hands. Or if I break the hdmi port.

I use a set of modified vintage 1 "fast Tevidon lenses for BMPCC. I have 10mm F2, 16mm F1.8 25mm F1.4 a 35mm F1,9
They are small, light, cheap, relatively affordable (E-bay) and reliable. I can modify them to MFT and I can also adjust the aperture to a nice circle for them. The aperture has 9 or 12 (35mm version) blades for this lenses. For me ideal lenses for true pocket cinema camera.

135mm is damn long for that small sensor. You'll need a tripod made of concrete to stabilize it Blackmagic Forum • View topic (34)

I have a Leica 135mm Tele-Elmar f/4. Great lens, I sometimes use it with a Leica bellows for macro (I have the version with a removable head).

Can’t say I’ve had much reason to use it with my Pocket 4K though Blackmagic Forum • View topic (39)

Lord knows where this guy got a copy with an original box. The lens was only made from 1960-1965:

Update, I got the Meike 16mm to go with the hodgepodge set I described in an earlier post, haven't had a chance to really test it yet, but based purely on feel, I want the whole set, economics will delay that of course, I will be shooting tests soon and hopefully all the different lenses are neutral enough to cut together.

I would go with native MFT lenses, like the SLR Magic Hyperprime or the new Microprime lenses. Also if you can find them, original cine S16 lenses with an adapter work well also. These are all smaller lenses that keep the camera setup small and compact. If you want to use big APS/C or S35 lenses, than get the new Pocket 4K camera.

I just sold all of my Samyang/Walimex lenses and the Schneider 18-90mm. Kept the SLR Magic 12mm (but it has problems with the focus pull - maybe someone knows how to fix it?).

Bought a Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 for 50€ used in a good condition.

Now I am only looking for a better lens zoom or primes. I am currently working on a documentary which I am applying with for filmschool (Directing). Otherwise I have from time to time jobs like filming and cutting.

Which lenses would you buy for the BMPCC OG ? I also thinking to buy the BMPCC4K for easier post. I do not like the plastic build so much and from what I have seen it is not really better as the OG from the picture quality. Also the OG has good potential in Low-Light with a Lens like Sigma 18-35
Lenses I am looking at

SLR Magic 10mm, 17mm, 25mm
Meike 8mm, 12mm, 16mm, 25mm
Super 16 Zeiss Distagon T1.3 - 9.5mm, 12mm, 16mm, 25mm
Distagon Zeiss Contax or ZE
Nokton MFT 10.5mm, 17.5mm, 25mm, 42.5mm
Sigma 18-35mm

I want a lens or a set for professionell video production like Documentaries, Narrative Shorts

Maybe the Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 is just enough and really good with the IS
For more stabilization I will buy a neck belt for 3 points
